Advertise your business FAQs

  • How much effort should I put into social media marketing?

This question is often asked, and most don't like the answer. The answer is more effort than you think. If you own a small business, a local coffee shop, for example, you should spend roughly 30 minutes of your day managing your social media accounts. You'll need to do more than just make posts, you also need to spend time managing your reputation. Reputation management includes responding to comments as well as online reviews. At the minimum, your business should have Facebook, Twitter and Instagram profiles. You should add Pinterest and YouTube if it suits your business. As an owner, you should also have a LinkedIn profile. While you may not think you have the time to spend using social media, it is best to avoid assigning the duties to an employee unless that person 100 percent understands your branding and how you want to communicate with your customers. One bad social media interaction can wreak havoc on your business, so it is important to be careful about how you respond to customers.

  • How can I market my small business for free?

Marketing can be extremely expensive, but it doesn't have to be. Here are a few ways you can increase awareness of your company for free,

    • Make social media profiles
    • Make a LinkedIn and Glassdoor business profile
    • Build a free website
    • Verify your business in Google Maps
    • Volunteer in your community
    • Write a guest post for a related website
    • Organize a publicity stunt
    • Consider a strategic partnership
    • If applicable, join review sites like Yelp and Travel Advisor
  • How can I protect my marketing ideas?

If you are working on a new marketing campaign and want to keep your ideas protected, you can ask those involved to sign a Nondisclosure Agreement (NDA). This legal document helps protect sensitive information such as the details of your marketing plan, new branding images, and pre-released products. It cannot protect general information that may already be known to the public, but it can help you keep your marketing plan unknown until it is launched.

  • Is video advertising effective?

Yes, it is. In the past, producing your own video advertisements was expensive and you'd have to pay for ad placement. This is no longer the case. Now you can easily make short videos yourself and publish them online for free. There are even free online tools available that can transform still images into video presentations. Video used right can help boost sales, increase brand awareness and broadens your market reach. Even bad videos may increase your brand awareness. If you do not have a budget for video, learn about how to produce a shareable video from free online sources and start by simply using your phone and posting to your social media accounts.

  • How does localization help my company?

Localization helps customers in targeted areas find your business. If you are a local restaurant or provide services in a specific region, you'll want to target your potential customers in your area. If you own an online company, you may benefit from having a few versions of your website, such as a U.S. and Canadian version. At the minimum, you'll want to make sure your address and service area is communicated on your website and in your service description. Larger companies may benefit from hiring a professional to help them localize their websites for specific markets.
